You tune your violin carefully, let go of the peg—and suddenly it turns backwards and the string drops flat again.
A slipping violin peg can be frustrating, but it does not automatically mean that the peg needs replacing.
Sometimes the problem is simply that the peg was not pushed gently into the pegbox while tuning. Other times, the string has been wound poorly or the peg needs a small amount of proper peg compound. But if the peg repeatedly slips despite correct tuning, the real problem may be the fit between the peg and the pegbox.
Traditional violin pegs are tapered friction pegs. They stay in position because the tapered peg makes close contact with the matching surfaces inside the pegbox. Properly fitted pegs should turn smoothly while still having enough friction to remain exactly where they are placed.
1. You Are Not Pushing the Peg Inwards While Tuning
This is one of the first things to check, especially for beginners.
Unlike a guitar machine head, a traditional violin peg does not contain gears. Turning it changes the string tension, but the peg also needs to remain seated securely inside its tapered hole.
When making a larger tuning adjustment:
- Support the violin securely.
- Turn the peg slowly.
- Apply gentle inward pressure towards the pegbox as you approach the correct pitch.
- Stop pushing once the peg is holding securely.
You should not need excessive force.
If a peg holds normally once you use the correct technique, there may be nothing wrong with the peg at all.

2. The String Is Wound Poorly Around the Peg
Before assuming the peg itself is faulty, look inside the pegbox.
The string should be wound neatly around the peg rather than crossing randomly over itself or forming a messy bundle.
Poor winding can make tuning less predictable and may prevent the peg and string from behaving as they should.
If the problem started immediately after changing your strings, check the winding first.
There is another possibility worth mentioning here: new strings stretch.
If you have just installed a new set and the violin gradually goes flat over several hours or days, that does not necessarily mean the peg is slipping. New strings commonly require repeated tuning while they settle.
A true slipping peg usually behaves differently—you may actually feel or see the peg suddenly rotate backwards.
3. Changes in Humidity Can Affect Wooden Pegs
Both the pegs and pegbox are traditionally made from wood, and wood responds to changes in moisture.
Changes in humidity can therefore alter how tightly the peg fits. Depending on the instrument and conditions, pegs may become either harder to turn or more inclined to slip.
In Singapore, it is tempting to blame every peg problem on humidity. I would not.
Our climate is humid, but many instruments also move repeatedly between air-conditioned rooms, vehicles, cases and outdoor conditions. More importantly, a peg that continuously slips in normal conditions should still be checked for fit rather than having every problem attributed to the weather.
Keeping the violin in reasonably stable conditions helps, but humidity control cannot correct a badly fitted peg.
4. The Peg Needs Proper Peg Compound
A peg can sometimes have an acceptable fit but still feel either too slippery or too difficult to turn.
This is where proper violin peg compound, sometimes called peg paste or peg dope, can help.
A proper peg compound is designed to perform two seemingly opposite jobs: allowing the peg to turn smoothly while providing enough friction for it to remain in position.
But more is not better.
Applying large quantities of compound will not repair an incorrectly fitted or badly worn peg.
Avoid improvised fixes such as covering the peg in rosin, chalk or other household substances. Use a product specifically intended for string-instrument pegs.
For players unfamiliar with removing and reinstalling violin strings and pegs, it is safer to have this done during a workshop inspection.
5. The Peg Does Not Fit the Pegbox Properly
This is where a temporary DIY solution stops being useful.
A correctly fitted traditional peg should make even contact with the pegbox at its bearing surfaces.
If the taper of the peg and the taper of the hole do not match properly, pushing harder may make the peg hold temporarily—but it does not correct the underlying problem.
The peg may need to be:
- refitted or reshaped;
- adjusted to restore proper contact;
- replaced with a correctly fitted new peg; or
- in more severely worn pegboxes, repaired before a new peg is fitted.
This work requires specialist peg-shaping and reaming tools. Removing too much wood from the pegbox is irreversible, so this is not an area where I recommend experimenting at home.
6. The Peg or Peg Hole Has Become Worn
A peg can work perfectly for years and gradually become troublesome.
Repeated tuning places wear on both the peg and its corresponding holes. Eventually the contact surfaces may no longer be as round or evenly matched as they once were.
An oval or uneven peg hole can cause the peg to alternate between being tight and loose as you turn it.
If the peg feels tight at one point of its rotation but suddenly loose at another, the problem is probably more than simple tuning technique.
Professional fitting is usually the better solution.

When Should You See a Luthier?
You do not need a workshop appointment every time a peg slips once.
But I would have the violin inspected if:
- the same peg repeatedly slips after tuning;
- you have to push extremely hard to make it stay;
- the peg is very stiff in one position and loose in another;
- peg compound only fixes the problem temporarily;
- the peg appears uneven, damaged or excessively worn;
- you notice damage or cracking around the pegbox;
- the problem began after the scroll or pegbox received an impact;
- you cannot keep the violin reliably in tune.

A workshop assessment can determine whether the violin simply needs adjustment or whether the peg actually requires refitting or replacement.
What About Mechanical or Geared Violin Pegs?
Traditional wooden pegs can work extremely well when they are fitted correctly.
So I would not automatically replace traditional pegs with mechanical pegs simply because one peg slips. First determine why it is slipping.
However, geared pegs can make sense for players who consistently struggle with conventional friction pegs or who simply want much finer, easier tuning.

They are an upgrade option, not a substitute for diagnosing a damaged pegbox. Correct sizing and installation still matter.
Can You Fix a Slipping Violin Peg Yourself?
For a minor problem, sometimes.
Start with the least invasive possibilities:
First: check your tuning technique and apply gentle inward pressure while turning the peg.
Second: check whether the string has been wound correctly.
Third: consider whether the violin has recently experienced a significant environmental change.
Fourth: if you know how to remove and reinstall a violin string safely, a small amount of proper peg compound may help.
But if the peg continues slipping, stop treating the symptom.
A properly functioning peg should not need a battle every time you tune.
Final Thoughts
A slipping violin peg is usually a small problem—but the correct fix depends entirely on why it is slipping.
Sometimes the answer is simply better tuning technique. Sometimes the peg needs a little appropriate compound. But when the peg no longer makes proper contact with the pegbox, no amount of pushing or temporary treatment will correct its geometry.
That is when peg fitting becomes luthier work.
And if you find yourself constantly fighting the same peg before every practice session, have it checked. Your violin should allow you to concentrate on playing—not spend the first ten minutes trying to persuade an E or A peg to stay where you put it.
