On Thursday, 10 October 2024, LVL Music Academy presented Symphony Surprise at the Esplanade Recital Studio. Held from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, the concert brought students together for an evening that began with individual performances and gradually expanded into ensemble and orchestral music.
An Evening That Grew in Scale
Symphony Surprise was structured differently from a traditional student recital. Rather than keeping the programme focused entirely on individual performances, the evening developed from violin, cello and piano solos and duets into increasingly larger musical collaborations.
The Esplanade Recital Studio provided an appropriate setting for this progression. Performing in a dedicated concert venue gives students a different sense of space, sound and occasion from what they experience during their regular lessons and rehearsals.
From Individual Performances to a Full Orchestra
The first part of the programme featured violin, cello and piano students performing a varied selection of repertoire. Alongside solo performances were collaborative items, including teacher-student duets and the LVL Kids Ensemble.
The scale of the concert then changed with the arrival of the LVL Orchestra. The orchestral programme moved across different musical styles, with works connected to composers such as Tchaikovsky, Dvořák and Shostakovich alongside music by Joe Hisaishi and familiar film repertoire.
The orchestra also extended beyond the core string sections, with woodwind instruments and vocal parts appearing within the programme. A separate woodwind quintet performance added another musical texture to the evening.
This progression from individual playing to a larger ensemble was an important part of Symphony Surprise. Students could experience how music changes when responsibility is shared across a group, and how an individual part becomes one element within a much larger musical structure.
Learning to Perform as Part of Something Bigger
For students, preparing an orchestral performance requires skills that go beyond learning an individual piece. Players must understand entrances, follow a conductor, maintain a shared pulse and listen continuously to the musicians around them.
Rehearsing towards a concert also introduces responsibility. Each musician needs to arrive prepared because the progress of the ensemble depends on the preparation of its individual members.
This complements the technical and musical foundations developed through regular music lessons. Solo playing develops independence and personal interpretation, while ensemble and orchestral work asks students to balance those skills with awareness, cooperation and musical discipline.
Symphony Surprise gave students the opportunity to experience both sides of performance within a single evening. Some moments placed one musician at the centre of the stage, while others depended on many performers working together to create one coordinated sound.
By concluding with larger-scale ensemble and orchestral performances, the concert reflected an important part of musical development: learning not only how to perform confidently as an individual, but also how to contribute meaningfully to a group.
