On 13 March 2022, LVL Music Academy presented the Peace Recital 2022 at Trehaus in Funan Mall, with two performances held at 5:00pm and 7:30pm.
Dedicated to Ukraine, the recital centred on music by Ukrainian composers and brought together a programme of chamber, solo and duo works.
A Programme Centred on Ukrainian Music
The Peace Recital was distinctive in that its programme focused entirely on Ukrainian composers and musical voices.
The programme included works by Boris Lyatoshynsky, Myroslav Skoryk, Viktor Kosenko, Mykola Lysenko and Alexander Gonobolin, alongside a contemporary work written in response to the crisis in Ukraine.
Three Ukrainian members of LVL Music Academy’s teaching staff were also connected with the recital, making the programme particularly meaningful to the LVL community at the time.
Music Across Different Forms
The recital explored Ukrainian music through several different instrumental settings.
The programme opened with the second movement of Boris Lyatoshynsky’s Ukrainian Quintet, a chamber work written during the Second World War.
Other works included Myroslav Skoryk’s Caprice for solo violin, Viktor Kosenko’s Dreams for violin and piano, Mykola Lysenko’s Elegy for piano, and Skoryk’s widely performed Melody.
The programme also included Metamorphosis by Alexander Gonobolin, written for two violins, as well as a contemporary string quartet movement inspired by memories of Ukraine.
Together, the selections introduced audiences to different generations of Ukrainian composers and a range of solo and chamber-music writing.
A Recital Dedicated to Ukraine
The timing and purpose of the concert gave the programme significance beyond an ordinary student or faculty recital.
Rather than presenting an unrelated collection of classical works, the programme was deliberately shaped around Ukrainian music and was dedicated to Ukraine.
At LVL, music has always extended beyond technical learning alone. Performances can also provide opportunities to explore different musical cultures, histories and composers while bringing musicians and audiences together.
Looking Back at Peace Recital 2022
Peace Recital 2022 remains a distinctive event within LVL’s performance history.
Held through two performances at Trehaus on 13 March 2022, it created an opportunity for audiences to hear music by Ukrainian composers spanning different generations and musical styles.
More than four years later, the recital remains part of LVL’s archive of concerts and performances — a record of how music, musicians and community came together at a particular moment in time.
